  • Major issues on iOS 18

I don’t know when it happened but the Tidal app no longer outputs the correct or advertised bitrate to an external DAC. On the Now Playing screen it will show as 192 or 96kHz but the DAC will show either 44.1 or 48 no matter what. I’ve tested this across ALL platforms and various devices. It is only an issue on iOS 18.

Love much about it. Sound quality and library are great. Love the diverse genres, recommendations and playlists. One incredibly annoying thing however is that when I search for a multi movement classical work, the movements don’t always appear in order and are frequently separated by those belonging to other works, often by entirely different composers. The effect is jarring. This forces me to pay attention at the end of movement one so that I can queue up movement two, etc. Presenting sequential movements from the same recording should be the default. Instead each movement of an integral work is often presented as a bleeding chunk.

I have been searching for a hifi music streaming service and discover TIDAL by accident. After using it for a couple of days, the sound quality is much better than Apple Music or Amazon Music. I absolutely love the downloading feature for offline use and the create your own playlist is another terrific feature. I listened to my playlist for a 13-hour flight to Asia with no issues, using my iPhone and B&W P8 wireless headphones. Sounds amazing for the entire trip! You definitely need to try it out if you are using other streaming services. TIDAL delivers in a BIG way!!!

The playlist and ways to view different music and videos is unmatched. Way better than Apple Music .
  • Tidal music is great. The app is made by kids who don’t listen to music.

Edit: new update, now it has a gap in between tracks again. A lot of albums are recorded to be played continuously. I’ll never understand the developers’ fetish for putting a ms or 2 of silence between tracks. It’s this app and no other music apps lol 🤪 I have to connect through my Google smart tv app: the only way that’s not been broken by the new update lol. I love Tidal music. I’ve had it for years. The app is designed by kids who don’t listen to anything but pop. About 2/3 of the time you load the app without signal, it gives you a login screen. Obviously can’t log in without signal. So downloaded songs can’t be played without signal. What is the point of downloaded music if you can’t access them when you have no signal like every other music app? On a plane? On a remote hike? In a basement gym? Good music though. Especially when you can actually connect it to a high fi player/not Bluetooth.

  • 5 star service, app loses current track constantly

Love the service but recently the app got a lot worse - it will frequently lose your place in the current album if you stop playback and background the app. When this happens (for me several times a day) the album will start over at track 1 when you reopen the app and hit play. Update: the app consistently does this still. Picking up where I left off when reopening the app is table stakes, i can’t believe it still has this bug! Update: years later this is still a bug. If you pause playback while the app is in the background and then gets closer by iOS, it won’t correctly resume if the app is reopened.
